Ciao!

I’m Sophia Frye—an artist and art historian. I excel at the intersection of art, languages, and research, applying my technical knowledge of textile processes to my art historical studies. I graduated from Scripps College with a B.A. in studio art and Italian studies. I also hold a master’s degree in art history, during which I spent a year in Florence immersing myself in the Italian Renaissance at Syracuse University Florence. Throughout my time in Italy, I researched at premier Renaissance history libraries and archives where I studied primary source materials and received a rigorous training in art historical research. My primary research focus is Italian Renaissance tapestries and representations of textile labor in art and literature.

My art history background grew out of my training as an artist and my desire to understand artistic practices. I grew up on a hobby farm in Southern California with birds of all sorts, angora goats, and fruit trees and flowers galore. Processing our goats’ mohair with my mom as a child sparked my love for fiber art and my curiosity about textile traditions. Frequent visits to art museums in Los Angeles fostered my interest in art history and thinking critically about art.

This is a place for you to commission pieces and follow my art journey. Thanks for being here!
